The Building Designers Association of Tasmania represents a group of building design professionals who use a combination of experience and skill to bring to reality a building design that is tailored to their Clients individual needs and aspirations.

The design of buildings is a complex procedure which requires many skills including artistic talent, imagination and innovation as well as scientific and technological expertise and knowledge of current legislation and building practices. Building designers are proficient in providing creative design for their Clients, while at the same time providing a building which is functional, practical, energy efficient and cost effective.

Members are bound by a code of professional conduct and are encouraged to operate at the highest professional level at all times.
The Association also recognises the importance and need for professional development as an ongoing commitment for members and as such provides valuable professional development seminars regularly throughout the year.

Building Designers can produce a design for your residential, (including multi-residential) or commercial project, from a brief or a sketch you have prepared, or an idea you have in mind.
We see things from your point of view and put many years of practical design experience into taking and shaping your brief to a final concept.
Every building site is unique and has its own complexities. It is the task of the Building Designer to understand the complexities, and maximise the possibilities of the site - to meet and sometimes exceed the requirements or expectations of the client.



A building designer can provide the following services and more:


• Interprets and assists in the evolution of a clients brief.
• Prepares and develops conceptual drawings or sketch plans based on the agreed design brief, for the client's consideration. These would usually show floor plan layouts, external design of building elevations and may include perspective or three dimensional views. Sometimes this may include interior views.
• Once approval is received from the client, the Building Designer prepares detailed architectural working drawings and specifications.  Working drawings include plans, elevations, sections, and may include other aspects such as construction details, layouts, joinery details, plumbing and drainage, car parking and landscaping.
• Specifications may be incorporated into the drawings or a separate document is prepared to be read with the drawings. This may include various schedules for doors, windows, materials, fixtures and finishes.
• Liaises with relevant consultants (engineers, quantity surveyors, building surveyors, planning professionals, etc...) to ensure all aspects required for the project are adequately addressed.
• Examines relevant codes and local council by-laws in the course of undertaking project documentation.
• Prepare documents for Council Development (Planning) applications where required.  Designers can also submit final documents for a Building Permit.
• Some designers extend their service to the construction stage and can include tendering the project, periodical site inspections and contract administration.
